Those involved in car wrecks can ask for emergency medical care at the scene of a crash. They can also make arrangements to travel to a hospital for diagnosis and care if emergency transportation isn't necessary.

Some people quickly realize that they need support after a crash. Others might overlook the initial warning signs of serious injuries. While some crash injuries are obvious, others are easy for people to overlook initially after a wreck. People may either underestimate the severity of their injuries or fail to recognize that they have an injury at all.

Symptoms may take time to develop

Some of the most serious car crash injuries may only present minimal symptoms at first. People with internal bleeding could be at risk of death without appropriate intervention. The blood loss may need to reach a dangerous point for them to notice any warning signs of the injury. Other times, symptoms may only arise when the blood accumulating inside an individual's body puts pressure on organs.

In scenarios where people sustain brain injuries, their symptoms may be minor and generic at first. However, as pressure increases inside the skull, their symptoms may worsen. People often need a professional medical evaluation to identify the signs of potentially serious injuries that could continue to progress.

Delayed diagnosis can create legal issues

People with stable or internal injuries caused by car crashes may have a difficult path ahead. When they eventually seek out care and treatment, they may face a worse prognosis because they delayed their treatment initially.

The days between their initial injury and their diagnosis can also affect their pursuit of compensation later. Insurance companies may question the connection between injuries and a crash when people don't receive care quickly after a wreck.

The more severe the initial collision was, the more important it would be to see a healthcare professional after a wreck. Doctors can evaluate people for internal injuries and get them immediate care when necessary.

Medical records validating the connection between an injury and a crash can be beneficial for those who have sustained harm in a collision. Seeking compensation after a motor vehicle collision is often faster and easier for those who take the right steps.

As winter gives way to spring in Massachusetts, more pedestrians are going to take to the streets to enjoy warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours and outdoor activities. This transition from winter to spring will – very unfortunately – inspire specific risks for those walking near roadways. For example, increased pedestrian traffic, changing weather conditions and lingering hazards from winter can contribute to accidents. Both drivers and pedestrians must remain vigilant to reduce the risk of injuries.

For starters, even as temperatures rise, the effects of winter can still be present on sidewalks and streets. Potholes, leftover patches of ice and wet roadways from melting snow can create dangerous conditions for both pedestrians and drivers. Pedestrians should stay alert for uneven walking surfaces and avoid stepping onto icy patches, especially in the morning when temperatures may still be low. Drivers should reduce speed in areas with pedestrian traffic and be mindful that braking distances may be affected by wet or damaged roadways.

Vigilance and visibility

As spring inspires people to go outdoors, crosswalks and intersections become busier. More cyclists, runners and pedestrians mean that drivers must pay extra attention, particularly in urban areas and near schools, parks and residential neighborhoods. Pedestrians should always use designated crosswalks and remain cautious, even when they have the right of way. Making eye contact with drivers before crossing can help ensure that they are seen.

Additionally, even with the benefit of longer daylight hours, visibility remains a key concern when it comes to pedestrian safety. Early morning and evening walkers should wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility to drivers. Street lighting may still be limited in some areas after winter, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. Using sidewalks when available and walking against traffic when no sidewalks exist can help reduce the risk of being struck by a vehicle.

Finally, both drivers and pedestrians should minimize distractions to stay aware of their surroundings. Drivers should avoid using their phones or engaging in other distractions while driving through areas with high foot traffic. Pedestrians should also be cautious when using mobile devices or headphones, as these can reduce awareness of nearby vehicles. Understanding right-of-way laws and waiting for safe opportunities to cross any particular street can prevent accidents.

Not all accidents can be prevented. Yet, by remaining visible and vigilant, pedestrians can stay safer than they otherwise might during spring. Similarly, by remaining alert, motorists can minimize their risk of causing vehicle-pedestrian crashes at this time of year.

When snow falls rapidly, plows may struggle to keep the roads clear. Drifting snow can affect vehicle traction, plus cover up debris, potholes and other dangers in the road.

When temperatures fluctuate, snow may melt during the warmest part of the day. The meltwater may then refreeze, leaving a thin layer of black ice on street surfaces that can affect traffic safety. Weather conditions can increase the risk of a major collision. Those involved in wrecks caused by winter weather conditions may worry about whether they can hold the other driver responsible.

Does inclement weather limit personal culpability for causing a crash?

Drivers should adjust their road habits

Winter weather is an annual concern for those living in Massachusetts. As such, motorists are generally well aware of what adjustments they need to make to ensure their safety in traffic.

Drivers know that they must slow down and leave more following space between vehicles. They know they need to avoid sudden maneuvers. They are generally aware of the need to allow more time for travel and to stay off the roads whenever possible if the weather is particularly severe.

Even if people forget those safety-critical driving habits, the state and news media are quick to remind people of what is necessary for winter road safety. Therefore, drivers generally cannot blame the weather if they cause crashes.

There is an expectation that anyone driving in inclement winter weather should change their habits according to road and weather conditions. The failure to do so opens a motorist up to allegations of unsafe conduct. Those involved in winter collisions caused by drivers who don't slow down and who tailgate despite slick road conditions may be able to hold the other driver accountable through an insurance claim or a personal injury lawsuit.

Winter weather collisions have the potential to cause severe injury, as drivers can lose control of their vehicles with little warning. Altering traffic behavior to account for winter weather is necessary for those who do not want to be at fault for motor vehicle collisions.

Those who end up injured in crashes related to winter weather may need help holding the other driver accountable. Understanding that weather is not an excuse for unsafe driving can help people as they evaluate their options after a wreck.

After a car crash, people generally need financial compensation. They have to repair their vehicles. They might have medical expenses to cover. Their car crash may have also resulted in reduced income.

People usually begin the compensation process by seeking insurance coverage from the driver at fault for the crash. If there isn't insurance or if coverage is not enough, then the people seeking compensation may need to consider a lawsuit. People can potentially take legal action against the driver at fault for the crash or possibly a business with a degree of liability for the incident.

Particularly during the insurance negotiation process, people seeking financial compensation might make mistakes. For example, they might settle for less than they require given the long-term consequences of the collision. People generally need to estimate future expenses to ensure that they pursue an appropriate amount of compensation.

What future expenses might influence crash costs?

There are several likely expenses that people have to consider when evaluating an insurance settlement. The first is the diminished value of a repaired vehicle.

Vehicle history reports let dealerships and future buyers discover that a vehicle sustained damage in a prior collision. Even after repairs, that damage can reduce what the vehicle is worth. Diminished resale value can represent thousands of dollars of lost money.

There are medical expenses to consider. Current treatment invoices are potentially only a fraction of the long-term care costs an injury might generate. Future surgery, pain management or physical therapy could cost tens of thousands of dollars. People also have to consider how injuries might alter their support needs when they are older and medically vulnerable.

Lost wages and earning potential are also important considerations. People with significant injuries may not be able to work for weeks or even months. In more serious injury cases, they may not be able to return to the same career. They may face diminished long-term earning potential. Future wages and benefits can influence the overall value of a car crash insurance claim.

Those trying to negotiate with insurance providers often need help, and that’s okay. Estimating the costs generated by a car crash and countering low settlement offers can be difficult to handle alone. People who obtain legal support when pursuing post-collision compensation are less likely to settle for well below what they deserve, and are more likely to receive that maximized amount at the end of the negotiation process.

Teens are often excited to get out on the road, but their parents likely feel very anxious about their driving. Young adults can easily make mistakes while driving that can result in life-altering injuries or a traumatic experience that forever changes the teen's perspective and mental health.

Parents want to give their children freedom and opportunities as they mature, but they also want to protect them from the various dangers they may encounter. Those raising teenagers who are old enough to obtain a learner's permit may benefit from employing the three tips below to keep their teen driver safe.

1. Establish and model reasonable safety rules

Teenagers are often very skeptical of their parents' behavior. They are quite aware of perceived hypocrisy, in particular.

Teenagers learn from example as much as they learn from the rules set to govern their behavior. Parents need to implement reasonable safety rules about concerns like distracted driving. They should attempt to serve as positive role models by following those rules consistently themselves.

2. Minimize nighttime driving

State rules regarding young drivers limit their ability to drive after dark. Young adults typically cannot drive between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless they have a parent or guardian with them in the vehicle. Concerns about curfews and sleep schedules are not the reason that the state has such limitations.

Instead, the percentage of severe crashes that occur after the sunsets is largely what inspires rules about nighttime driving. Parents can help by giving their new drivers plenty of opportunities to drive during the daytime and making a point of having alternate arrangements in place once the sun sets.

3. Prioritize adequate practice

Safe driving involves not just rote memorization of traffic rules but also becoming comfortable behind the wheel. The more time that teens spend practicing in the presence of an adult, the better their chances of avoiding a wreck when they are on their own.

Technically, young drivers only need to log 40 hours of supervised drive time in addition to educational course requirements. Demanding more practice than the state requires may frustrate the young driver but can give parents the peace of mind that comes from knowing they have had plenty of hours at the wheel.

Parents can help increase the likelihood that their children avoid a crash by preparing them properly. Having a plan in place in case a motor vehicle collision occurs is also a smart choice. Teens need to know who to call and how to respond in the worst-case scenario.

The holidays at the end of the year and the New Year itself often lead to raucous celebrations. People get together with friends or family. They may travel across the states to celebrate with their loved ones. The combination of travel and celebration can be relatively dangerous.

Unfortunately, the holidays often see a noticeable increase in drunk driving collisions. People who had one too many eggnogs on Christmas or beers while watching football on Thanksgiving have to get home after their parties. A small percentage of those impaired motorists cause crashes that result in devastating consequences for other people.

Obviously, ensuring that a sober person drives on the holidays is the most important way to avoid drunk driving collisions. What other safety tips can help families stay safe around the holidays?

Travel early or late

Some of the most dangerous times to be on the road include the morning of major holidays and the late evening on those days. The day before can also be relatively dangerous. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is frequently one of the busiest bar nights of the year. By traveling a day ahead of time or a day after the holiday, people can reduce their risk of encountering inebriated celebrants on their way to or from a party.

Stay on major thoroughfares

Many drunk drivers are locals who may drive after drinking regularly. One of the many tactics that those who habitually overindulge use to avoid arrest is to travel on rural roads where they are less likely to encounter the police. Drivers hoping to avoid drunk driving crashes can therefore benefit from seeking out busier streets with higher speed limits. The presence of more vehicles means more police presence and less likelihood of encountering a drunk motorist.

Reroute if necessary

Few things are more anxiety-inducing than realizing a driver nearby is not in full control of their vehicle. When people spot a driver swerving all over, braking erratically and otherwise displaying signs of impairment, their first priority should be to put as much distance between themselves and that driver as possible. Getting off the highway or turning off onto another street can help them limit the likelihood of a crash.

If a crash does occur, those involved may need to notify police officers of their suspicion that the person who caused the motor vehicle collision is under the influence of alcohol. An accurate police report increases the likelihood of injured people successfully filing insurance claims or personal injury lawsuits later on.

The winter months see inclement weather that may include sleet, freezing rain and snow. Freezing precipitation is just one of many factors that can lead to increased traffic risk during the coldest part of the year.

Sometimes staying off of the roads in inclement weather just isn’t an option. The following are some of the most effective winter driving safety tips for motorists to adopt as the weather cools.

Adjust daily schedules

Particularly for those who work first-shift jobs or take their children to school, the morning drive can be a major safety concern. Although local news stations do their best to offer accurate insight into the weather the next morning, people sometimes wake up to surprisingly snowy or icy streets. The only way to safely drive on winter roads is to slow down and increase the following distance. Both of those choices can increase how long it takes to reach a destination. People may have to wake up a little earlier during the winter so that they can leave earlier, if necessary, based on road conditions. Leave plenty of time for your morning commute, or the morning school run to account for icy, and snow-covered roadways and highways.

Update maintenance practices

There are several changes to a vehicle that can improve its functionality during the winter months. For example, many drivers have snow tires that they put on for the winter season to ensure optimal vehicle performance. Whatever the preference for tire type, it always pays to have your tires checked in advance of the winter driving season. Drivers may also replace or upgrade blades on their windshield wipers to more effectively handle sleet and snow. Tire pressure is another important consideration. Cold air temperatures and street surfaces can reduce tire pressure, making it necessary to inflate vehicle tires slightly more than usual in the winter months.

Plan safer routes

In general, the most direct route is usually the safest. Crash risk increases based on the number of miles traveled. However, often the most direct roads often have higher levels of traffic and higher speed limits. Drivers may need to plan alternate routes to their standard destinations during the winter months to reduce their risk of a preventable collision.

Carry the right gear

Having safety gear inside a vehicle can make a major difference for those involved in crashes during the winter. From blankets and spare boots to flares so that approaching vehicles can see them through the snowstorm, a crash kit carried in the trunk of a vehicle can't help people stay safe and comfortable until emergency responders arrive after a crash. A small shovel to dig out of a parking space can be extremely useful. It may even be helpful to have non-perishable snacks on board, especially for kids.

Knowing how to respond if a crash does occur is as valuable as being proactive about limiting car crash risk. Those with a plan for safety have the best chances of avoiding a wreck and avoiding injury.

Unfortunately, parents have to make decisions that may put their children at risk. For example, most parents need to regularly transport their children in motor vehicles despite car crashes being a leading cause of both death and catastrophic injury for minors.

Parents may be extra cautious when they have children in their vehicles and may do everything in their power to ensure their children's safety, such as using appropriate car seats and avoiding common driving hazards, like distraction. Despite those efforts, thousands of parents every year have to deal with their children experiencing major injuries in collision scenarios.

Parents often learn after injuries occur that the costs to treat major injuries can be much higher for children than they are for adults. Why are crash injuries often more costly when the person hurt is a minor?

Their growing bodies

An assortment of different injuries is possible when motor vehicles collide. One of the most common injuries that requires immediate emergency medical care is a fracture or broken bone. People have become dismissive about fractures because modern medical care has become very proficient at treating these injuries.

Unfortunately, fractures for children can easily be more serious than fractures for adults. If the fracture damages the growth plate, children may need significant medical support. They might even be at risk of disruptions to their physical development as their bodies continue growing. The need to evaluate and treat potential growth plate injuries can substantially increase the cost of trauma care after a crash.

Their need for specialized support

Pediatric medical specialists typically charge more per hour than medical professionals who provide similar services for adult patients. The reason for that increased cost is simple. Pediatric specialists require more training and often face more significant expenses if patients or their parents bring medical malpractice claims against them. The total cost for treatment can be thousands of dollars higher depending on the type of care required.

Their potential need for repeat procedures

Particularly in scenarios where children develop significant physical injuries or disfiguring wounds, they may not be eligible for one-off treatments like adult patients usually are. They may require multiple procedures spaced out over many years as their bodies continue to grow and develop. Otherwise, they may end up with scars and functional limitations that affect their lives indefinitely.

Parents handling the aftermath of motor vehicle collisions need to be realistic about the medical costs and secondary expenses generated when children have significant injuries. Pursuing the maximum compensation available is often necessary in cases involving significant injuries and disfiguring wounds that affect children.

A variety of different factors influence the likelihood of a major pedestrian collision. Visibility factors including the time of day, the clothing of the pedestrian and where they cross the road are important considerations.

Statistically, late night is a particularly dangerous time for pedestrians to be out on the street. Crossing at unmarked locations can be more dangerous than crossing at illuminated, marked crosswalks. Going out when the risk is higher than average is also a safety concern. The single deadliest day for pedestrians remains consistent from year to year.

Halloween is a dangerous day for pedestrians

There are a few days that see a larger number of pedestrians in the street than Halloween. Millions of children flood into their communities dressed in costumes each year to trick-or-treat. Particularly when they do not have parents present, they might dart out into traffic with tragic results.

The combination of high levels of pedestrian activity and dark costumes makes for a very dangerous situation. Researchers have found that regardless of what day of the week Halloween falls on, it is consistently the deadliest day of the year for pedestrians. Visibility issues and poor choices by youthful pedestrians contribute to the rate of fatal crashes. It is also important to recognize how many adults celebrate the holiday with alcohol at parties.

How can parents use this information?

Obviously, parents don't want to deny their children one of the greatest joys of childhood just because they worry about the risk of a crash. That being said, parents may want to make a point of monitoring their children while trick-or-treating. They don't necessarily need to micromanage so much as they need to be present to remind their child to cross at appropriate locations and check their surroundings first. Prioritizing costumes that are visible or encouraging a child to carry a flashlight or glow sticks could help draw the attention of nearby motorists.

If a pedestrian crash does occur, parents may need to pursue compensation on behalf of their child. Pedestrian collisions can lead to major insurance claims or possibly lawsuits. Understanding how to avoid and respond to pedestrian crashes can be beneficial for everyone who goes out on Halloween.

Summer is winding down and the back-to-school season has just begun – or is about to start. That means that the roads are quickly going to become congested again with those familiar yellow buses.

For drivers, this is a good time to brush up on the rules of the road where school buses are concerned so that you can avoid tickets, collisions and the potential for a tragic encounter. Here are the most important things to keep in mind:

Watch the lights on the buses for indications of what to expect

School buses are equipped with a series of lights that bus drivers use to signal their intentions:

Yellow flashing lights: These indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload passengers. While drivers often increase their speed when they see a yellow traffic signal flashing to avoid stopping on red, that approach can lead to disaster when a school bus is involved.

Red flashing light and an extended stop arm: The bus has stopped and passengers will be getting on or off. A good rule of thumb is to stay at least 10-20 feet behind a school bus at all times so that you have ample time to react.

When the school bus is stopped, all vehicles in both directions must stop until the school bus retracts the stop arm and turns off the red flashing light. This includes not only traffic on two-lane roads but also traffic on multi-lane roads where there is no median divider. (On a divided highway with a median, only the traffic on the side of the median with the bus must stop. Traffic moving on the opposite side of the median can proceed with caution.)

Violating these rules is both dangerous and illegal. It can result in a $250 fine for the first offense – but much worse is the possibility that you could end up hitting a child that darts into the street as they enter or exit the bus.

Parents, too, need to educate their children on school bus safety and teach them to be cautious of cars – because not every driver is conscious of their obligations. If your child is injured by a negligent driver while entering or exiting a school bus, it may be wise to explore your legal options.
