The Governor’s Council on Nov. 4 confirmed Stephen B. Geary for a seat on the Lowell District Court bench, approving the Lowell attorney for what he had told councilors a week earlier was his “dream nomination” in his native city.

Councilors Eileen R. Duff and Marilyn M. Petitto Devaney praised for Geary before the 6-0 vote. Councilor Christopher A. Iannella was not present.

“Besides being an outstanding [future] judge, he has compassion, he has empathy,” Devaney said. “He’s just what we need on the bench. I’m very proud to be voting for him today.”

Geary has practiced for the last 24 years with Geary & Geary, a firm founded by his father. The Suffolk Law School graduate told councilors on Oct. 28 that he has handled cases representing “just about everything that could happen in a District Court,” ranging from landlord-tenant relations to restraining orders to dangerousness hearings to bail hearings.

He told councilors that he first applied for a judgeship around 2016 and his name made it to Gov. Charlie Baker’s desk, but he was told there were no vacancies at the time. After he reapplied a couple of years later, there was an opening in the Mill City, where the nominee has lived all of his 57 years.
