Tips for staying safe on your motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle can be a great way to spend a sunny afternoon as you experience summer in Massachusetts and beyond. Let’s go over a few tips that can help you stay safe regardless of where and when you happen to be on your bike.

Employ defensive driving tactics

Most riders know that other drivers are often inattentive. Simply stated, car and truck drivers often fail to see motorcycles. Be aware of vehicles at upcoming intersections; these vehicles may pull into your traffic lane unexpectedly. Moreover, accidents may occur in the so-called, “normal” flow of traffic as drivers change lanes. Be aware of the blind spots of nearby motorists to help you maintain a safe path when other drivers are inattentive.

Your bike is bigger and heavier than it looks

It is not a good idea to ride a motorcycle that is too tall or heavy for you to control. This is because it may be harder to stay upright on sharp turns or while driving on slick roads. If you aren’t sure what type of motorcycle is right for you, don’t hesitate to ask an experienced rider for advice.

Make sure to ride at a speed that is safe for road conditions

During periods of dry road conditions, you should aim to stay as close to the posted speed limit as possible. However, if road surfaces are wet or covered in debris, it may be necessary to ride at speeds below the posted limits. In addition to watching your speed, it’s also important to wear protective gear such as a helmet, gloves and pants. Doing so can help to minimize your risk of serious injuries if you are involved in a motorcycle accident.

Check your bike for defects before riding

Prior to leaving home, you should make sure that your motorcycle’s tires have proper tread and air pressure. You should also make sure that the lights work and that other major components are in good working order. It’s important to note that inadequate motorcycle maintenance is generally seen as negligent behavior.

Review the policy and maintain motorcycle insurance

Unfortunately, accidents may occur. It is often tempting to obtain minimum or some form of standard insurance coverage for the motorcycle. However, car insurance and motorcycle insurance do not necessarily cover the same types of issues. Motorcyclists should speak with their agent to understand the distinctions and what the policy they are purchasing actually covers. Riders may consider ensuring that their policy includes Medical Payments coverage, disability insurance and maximum limits for unisured/underinsured coverage.

Protective gear

Be sure to protect yourself with appropriate protective gear suitable for your ride.

Enjoy the ride, and stay safe!
